Maps help us to understand what is important and to consider proposals for the future.
There are three categories:
1. Maps of ancient Jerusalem, from founding through the the destruction of the Second Temple and the beginning of the Jewish Diaspora in the 1st century. These are mostly of an area that we now call the Old City. They have all been created after the fact, as there are no surviving maps from ancient Jerusalem.
2. Maps of modern Jerusalem. Beginning about a thousand years ago, maps were made that have survived to the present. These show the development of Jerusalem from a Byzantine trading center to the modern city of today.
3. Proposals. These show various proposals for a final peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians, including proposed borders between the two nations.
